WeLight Africa is proud to share the tangible results of its commitment to accelerating energy inclusion in rural areas across Africa.

Lagos, Nigeria, March 11 2025 – WeLight, a fast-growing pan-African Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE) company, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) of Nigeria to deploy and operate 400 minigrids plus 50 MetroGrids by 2030, significantly strengthening Nigeria’s renewable power infrastructure in rural and peri-urban communities. This agreement will bring first-time or improved electricity access to an estimated 1.5 to 2 million people, bolstering local economies and enhancing critical services in healthcare, education, and public safety.

WeLight celebrates the electrification of its 186th village, marking the culmination of four years of
rapid and sustained growth. This achievement demonstrates WeLight’s ability to scale effectively,
accelerating its expansion in Madagascar and Mali. As a result, one million people now benefit
from the economic and social advantages of access to productive and sustainable energy.

Following a rigorous review, WeLight has become the first company in Madagascar to achieve the B Corporation (B Corp) certification, an international label for companies that meet the highest standards of environmental and social performance. WeLight Madagascar in now part of a community of 50 certified B Corps in Africa. This prestigious recognition highlights WeLight’s commitment to creating a positive and meaningful impact on its entire ecosystem, while contributing to a more inclusive and regenerative economy.

Stichting Clean Energy and Energy Inclusion for Africa (CEI Africa) announces its intention to award a results-based financing (RBF) grant for a total of up to USD 1,886,700 to WeLight, a green mini-grid (GMG) developer, for the densification and construction of mini-grids in rural communities in Mali.
